On North Korea, death, and brainwashing:
As the situation in North Korea unfolds, I hope that news reporters are kind to the people of North Korea, as it’s not their fault that they’ve lived under a terrible regime and know no other life than one that they’ve entrusted with Kim Jong-il. I’m a little disappointed with the mocking tone that some journalists and bloggers have taken at the disbelief with the funeral...

Today, I sliced off the tip of my thumb.
EMT#1: Hey, how'd you do this?
me: Making tomato soup. I cut my thumb on a kitchen knife.
EMT#1: (laughs) Thought your hand was a tomato, eh? I've done that before.
me: Ah, yeah. Silly mistake.
EMT#1: Well, the good news is that the pain you feel right now is nothing compared to what you're going to feel tomorrow.
me: (laughs)
EMT#2: (unamused) Yo man, how about we keep the bedside chatter to a minimum?

My favourite songs made in 2011:
Not intended to be a “Best of 2011” list because there’s not any opinion that’s definitive for everyone. Keep in mind these are just songs that came out this year and not songs released as singles this year.
This list is probably incomplete. I didn’t really figure out how great “F.I.L.A.” was until the beginning of this year. Things will change. Maybe I...

Skream, wubstep originator, on Skrillex: →
The whole interview is pretty great, but even The Quietus knows this part is particularly interesting: But what are we gonna do, form a united front against Skrillex? Honestly, it’s pathetic, I think, it’s ridiculous. Either listen to it or don’t listen to it. There’s still nights playing the stuff those people want to hear. It’s just bitchiness, it really is. You haven’t got to like his music,...

“What u think about noguchi jay?” Kanye texted to his best friend. He hoped Jay would respond soon. Jay always knew what to do. Jay texted back instantly. “noguchis the shit but bey thinks he sux. she doesnt kno shit about furniture anyway doe” read Jay’s response. Kanye smiled, satisfied. He knew Jay would help him figure it out in the end. Kanye West set aside his...

The Things I Listened to In 6 Months:
(Not to be confused with a Best of 2011 list. Fuck that noise.)
Six months ago, I reset my Last.fm counter for the first time ever in an attempt to determine what I actually listen to these days and how long I spend listening to music. In short, I am interested in what I am interested in and how interested I am in what I am interested in. Got it? Okay.
(If you are interested for yourself, go...

– Roger Ebert, on the new film New Year’s Eve. I almost want Hollywood to put out another one of these dumb holiday movies every year just so I can read Ebert’s inevitably scathing (and hilarious) reviews.

THURSDAY IS MY FAVOURITE DAY OF THE WEEK.
today:
film final “interview”. I get to chat about Chinese-language film with a professor who hates everything I love and loves everything I hate. Somehow, we get along. Except on the subject of my paper introductions which he actually called “the worst”.
I get to finish the paper for that class. I need to finish the paper for that class.

My mother, the jokester aka MOM HUMOUR
Me: haha. Flight delayed two hours at least.
Mom: Do you have internet connection there. Can you get any work done?
Me: No internet but I'm writing what I can based on pre downloaded articles and Wikipedia pages and my phone.
Mom: Ok. Have boring fun.
Me: I am going to eat all my candy.
Mom: Then have candy fun.

On Drake and Tumblr:
Drake posted something to the October’s Very Own blog yesterday:
The thing that scares me most is Tumblr. I hate what Tumblr has become. Because it like, it reminds me of those clique-y girls in high school that used to make fun of everyone and define what was cool, but in five years, when you all graduate, that shit doesn’t matter. No one gives a fuck about that shit. Instead of...

On hidden agendas and Western cultural hypocrisy:
I’m taking a Chinese-language film class this quarter which means that I’ve spent countless hours reading Wikipedia pages obsessively.
While on the page for the film Hero directed by Zhang Yimou, one particular section caught my eye:
This film has faced criticism, as well as praise from abroad as a perceived pro-totalitarian and pro-Chinese reunification subtext. Critics also cited...

Here’s the Adult Swim bump with music I made back in college. It’s actually a remix of the song Hotel by Broken Social Scene.
Here’s the full track:
Hotel (Page turner Remix) - Broken Social Scene by Childish Gambino
All I want in a boy is a rapper who can also get down to Broken Social Scene. Is that too much to ask for?

On St. Vincent and the East/West divide:
The first time listening through Strange Mercy, I actually almost turned it off during the final track “Year of the Tiger”. With a beat much slower than the songs off the first half of the album, I found myself a little bored.
Listening now after reflecting on her show in Chicago on Wednesday, it’s actually kind of a weirdly interesting song.
Before actually playing the song,...

The Nets and NBA Economics →
I loved this story on Grantland earlier today narrating the recent history of the New Jersey Nets:
Let us recap. At the very moment the commissioner of the NBA is holding up the New Jersey Nets as a case study of basketball’s impoverishment, the former owner of the team is crowing about 10 percent returns and the new owner is boasting of “explosive” profits. After the end of...

On notation and handwriting:
If you’re not a nerdy math/physics type, this post will be absolute nonsense.
My Classical Mechanics professor notes vectors by underlining instead of the prevalent notation of an arrow above the vector. He’s a funny dude though, and his lecture was slow but clear and engaging. Classical Mechanics shouldn’t be too bad of a class even if it’s the most dull part of being a...

[D]on’t even bother trying to hump that couch, or anything else in the vicinity. Because Men’s Health also recently ranked Plano No. 52 on their list of Most Impotent Cities. (Subhead: “Where men are the most likely to go limp.” Thanks for the clarification, guys.)

Quick thoughts on 1977:
Because this post is coming a week after the album was released, there’s almost nothing that I can say that is useful or original. But here are a few:
Like Watch the Throne, this is a good album, maybe even a great album, but definitely not the best album. It’s not as good as the Love trilogy, but few things really are. Maybe it’s because 1977 lacks a really standout track...
